Ther's a Christian praise song that offers this request: "Open the eyes of my heart, Lord, open the eyes of my heart, I want to see you..." This poetic language does help the believing person to affirm the close personal relationship one has with God. But the skeptical or unbelieving person may be turned off by the notion of hearts having eyes! Such an individual may scoff at the possibility of a mortal human being entering into any sort of "personal relationship" with an entity that --as the devout one says -- is actually transcendent, eternal, even unknowable in many ways.
The Gospels record that once a group of folks approached disciples of Jesus with a request: "We want to see Jesus." They meant, of course, that they wanted the opportunity to speak personally with him, to get to know him, to find out what he was all about. "Seeing" was only part of what they desired. The manner in which our eyes have "hearts" is like this. We want to know Jesus, to speak with him and to be led by his instruction. We want the assurance that he is personally with us. This requires faith. The opening of the eyes of our heart is an act of faith.
