Journey

The experience of Christian discipleship is like a journey. In fact, when Christ invited the first disciples to follow him, that was a clue that they were going someplace! The spiritual journey of Christian faith has its twists and turns, peaks and valleys, rivers and airways.

Folks today are used to travel. We do it all the time, whether commuting to work or flying across continents. People in Bible times traveled too, though their modes of transportation were a bit different! Walking, riding camels or donkeys, chariots and horses. At least from the time of the Exodus, God's people have been on a journey, both physically and spiritually.

The season of Lent is an invitation to join or rejoin a spiritual journey. It begins with an awareness of our need for God and our own shortcomings. And it moves toward a deepened sense of God's acceptance in Christ, the forgiveness and restoration that is made possible to us through God's matchless grace. For disciples, the journey continues, with its ups and downs, but it is invariably headed toward a home with God.
