In the sports world we often hear interviews of coaches or players when the phrase "step up" is used. In general this is taken to mean that individual team members are expected to make a somewhat larger contribution than normal to the game, due to the injury or other limitation of fellow players. There is sometimes an implication, too, that perhaps not everyone has been "giving 100%" in the team effort, so players need to "step up" their level of effort. I first began to notice this colloquialism when it was associated with baseball hitters stepping up to the plate, and that concept was carried forward into other enterprises, such as business. To "step up" production is to increase the output. Even when it appears folks are doing all they can, sometimes it's necessary to figure out ways to do more if the endeavor is to be successful or effective.
Is there a need to "step up" our effort in the area of giving witness to our Christian faith?
