Prayers for Haiti

We are overwhelmed still by the suffering and devastation experienced by the people of Haiti as a result of last week’s earthquake. News of a major after-shock this morning compounds our concern. We mourn with those who mourn; we rejoice with those who are reunited with surviving loved ones; we question with those who question; we hope with those who hope, and with those who have lost hope.

Christians and people of other religious faiths are praying for the people of Haiti and for the rescue and aid workers, medical professionals, governmental and private agencies seeking to restore necessities to millions. Those of us who know of this experience primarily through the media feel we can do little but pray, though many have responded with generous gifts to go with their prayers. There is a passage of scripture that recognizes that at times it's difficult even to know how to pray, or what to pray for. It's in Paul's letter to the Romans.

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” [Romans 8:26-27]

It is with "sighs too deep for words" that we lift our prayers to God for the people of Haiti.
