Author Jim Henderson's wife (sorry, I don't know her name) came up with the idea of "momentology" -- making a big deal out of the moments one experiences and notices in life. [cf, Evangelism Without Additives] I had one of those moments yesterday in a worship service. After the pastor had concluded a delightful "children's message" with a bunch of squirming, beautiful kids, their adult leaders came to lead them off to "children's church" in another part of the building. As they were filing out, one little guy of about two years old looked out over the congregation and said, "Bye bye, Mommy and Daddy!" That was great!
I doubt the little fellow will remember that moment, but I don't think many of us in the congregation will soon forget it. He was perfectly secure in leaving his parents, but he wanted them to know he was going!
There's a sense in which this is the way each believer lives every day. We go about our daily business, but we do so under the over-arching love and providence of a loving God. We know God isn't going anywhere. That's true even when the days are very dark, even when the pain is quite severe, even when the loss is irreplaceable. That child's child-like trust must be something like what Jesus intended when he said that one must become as a little child to enter the Kingdom of heaven.
