We give thanks

The season of Thanksgiving serves as a gentle reminder to "count our blessings." Recently I heard an NBA player comment that Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday of the year. He mentioned this to an interviewer who had asked him about his generous provision of Thanksgiving dinners for poor and homeless people in our community. He recalled that as a youngster there were times when he and his family did not have sufficient food, clothing was second-hand at best, and even shelter wasn't assured. Now that he is living his dream of playing professional basketball, he felt the desire to "give back." Thanksgiving season is an opportunity to do that for him, and for many others.

In the Bible the Book of Psalms frequently refers to giving thanks. For instance, Psalm 75 begins, "We give thanks to thee, O God; we give thanks." Our Thanksgiving is enriched by giving. And when it is grounded in a relationship with God, it is transformed from a once-a-year remembrance to a daily experience of "thanks-living."
