Renowned author and holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel once commented,'God made people because He loves stories.' Certainly the Bible is chock full of the stories of folks engaged in relationships with God (or not!) and other people. From the First Couple, Adam and Eve, through the Book of Revelation, Scripture is replete with narratives of wonder, disappointment, joy, mistakes, grace. Jesus, of course, was a superlative story-teller, illustrating timeless truth in the every day circumstances of life.
The capacity to understand our own story with God and to speak about that, with honesty and sensitivity to the situation of another person, is a significant aspect of sharing our faith with others. What difference has God made in our lives? When have we felt especially close to God, and when have we felt distant? Who has made a contribution to our life of faith? What have been some of the "milestones" in our own faith journey? These and similar questions can help us think through our story with God.
Because while God loves stories, God loves the people he has made even more!
