This past Saturday my wife and I had the enjoyable experience of meeting with church friends we had not seen for many years. The occasion was a reunion of former members and pastors of a congregation that was closed a few years ago. We remembered stories of faithful Sunday school teachers who had an impact on our lives, fun events like youth church camps, and fellowship dinners, and Vacation Bible School, embarrassing/funny moments in church services. We looked at old photos, shared updates on our families, recalled the loved ones who have gone on. It was a heartwarming day.
One of the things that was so impressive was the number of people who spoke of the powerful teaching of former generations through word and example. Folks who now have grown children (and grandchildren) of their own remembered the kind direction they received when they were youngsters from the "church family." There were many role models in the church for the young people growing up. Folks in that congregation took seriously the responsibility they had for 'raising a child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.' It was a congregational privilege and responsibility.
Most of the folks at the reunion now belong to a variety of other churches, but they still regard Rose City Cumberland Presbyterian as their "home" church. That's where they learned what is most important in their faith experience. Over the years, folks moved away from that community, older members passed away. The church eventually came to the end of its life. But Saturday was a day of remembrance and rejoicing, giving thanks to God for the witness of this faithful church and so many friends who made a difference in our lives.
