Eye on the sparrow

The other day some friends and I were enjoying lunch on the patio of a local restaurant when a tiny sparrow lighted on the railing near our table. There seemed to be not a hint of concern that we were so close by. In fact, it's likely that this particular perch had proved nutritionally profitable for the little bird in the past!

We were fascinated to watch it lightly skipping along the rail, rapidly moving its head to survey its surroundings. I was reminded of that beloved gospel song, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow (and I know He Watches Me)." That tune was inspired by the scripture passage in which the Lord Jesus commented that almighty God notices even when a sparrow falls, and God is therefore abundantly aware of our needs as well. This in no way relieves us of the obligation to provide for ourselves and others, but it does remind us that ultimately, the providence of God exceeds all our efforts and extends far beyond what we so often think we need.
