Not long ago I was reminded of an interesting observation attributed to a mid-twentieth century theologian. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "Before you talk to a person about God, talk to God about that person." As disciples of Jesus committed to helping others explore Christian discipleship for themselves, this is good counsel for us.
Another interesting thought in this regard comes from E.M. Bounds: "Prayer is not preparation for the battle, it is the battle." In my own experience I find that to be true. Really submitting to the regular discipline of listening prayer, trusting in God's providence and grace for all that concerns me -- including the ministry of evangelism -- that is a continuing challenge.
Prayer, though, is essential to our faithful witness. It prepares our hearts for faith-sharing, and it reminds us that God's Spirit goes before us, leading us to those "divine appointments" with the persons God wants us to have relationships with for the ministry of Christ. And prayer assures us that this is God's redemptive work, not our own. We are "earthen vessels," amazingly invited to serve as co-workers in God's vineyard.
