The faith heritage I share with others in my denomination is a big part of our identity as a Church. Yesterday I visited Montgomery Bell State Park near Dickson, Tennessee, the site where, in a tiny log cabin on the frontier, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church began in 1810. We like to remember that our Church arose out of the Great Revival of 1800, and that the earliest representatives of the infant Church were committed to bringing the Good News to a dangerous and sparsely settled land. From those beginnings, the Church moved westward with the people, always seeking to lead folks to Christ.
That heritage of commitment to evangelism needs re-kindling in our own time. The "frontier" is quite different in the 21st century, but it certainly has its challenges. And people today need Good News.
