Cast the dot net

There's a great story near the conclusion of the Gospel of John in the New Testament about the Risen Christ appearing to the disciples on the lakeshore. They had been fishing through the night but caught nothing. The Lord suggested they cast the net on the other side of the boat. They hauled in a tremendous catch as a result!

This week our denomination's General Assembly is in session focusing on the theme "Cast the Dot Net," a reminder that today, to throw the nets to the other side of the boat has implications for our use of technology. Many churches and Christian leaders are using the internet and related technologies to share the Good News with the world, to nurture and equip disciples, to share information and inspiration. The worldwide web allows us to communicate globally virtually instantly. At no time in history has it been more possible for the everyday disciple to 'go into all the world' with the hope of Christ.

Many of us spend large amounts of time on computers and surfing the net. We might ask ourselves, What percentage of that time is used for sharing and deepening our faith?
