Attracted to the Light

In my office there's a pretty potted plant my wife gave me in an effort to liven up the place a bit. I've had it for a while now, sitting atop a bookcase near a large window. The web site I consulted says this plant is a Heart Leaf Philadendrom grown in Brazil and other South American regions. The site also indicates that anyone can grow these plants, an indisputable fact since it's thriving under my so-called "care."

From time to time I do think to water it, or more accurately, pour the remains of my cold coffee into it. And I adjust the heart-shaped hanging leaves to a position that I consider gives a more aesthetic look. A day or two later, I notice the leaves have returned to the way they were. They are attracted to the light, of course.

Though I have no green thumb, this plant continues to teach me something important. Even if circumstances beyond our control take us away from the Light for a time, disciples do turn back, do grow toward the Light of the world, Christ Jesus. This isn't of our own accord, though. It's the Light that is attractive, that draws us. Jesus said, 'If I am lifted up, I will draw all people to myself.'
