'Before you start work on my air conditioner, I need to know, are you saved?' That's the way my son, a service technician for a local H/AC business, told me a recent service call began. The client meant well, but even after Michael explained that yes, he was raised in the church and gave a bit of his background, that wasn't quite good enough. The man continued to press the issue throughout the service call. Fortunately, Michael is very capable, and the repair didn't take long!
It seemed humorous to my son, but imagine the impact if the person on the receiving end of this interrogation were a bit less understanding. I think secular folks are justifiably put off when, in our earnest desire to share our faith, we make that the primary agenda item for every interaction. To begin a conversation with a total stranger speaking of such personal matters is outrageous and unChristian. It's no wonder such experiences are enough to turn people away.
