Mark 13:1 – ‘And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”’
Like those first friends of Jesus, we are inclined to be impressed by large and beautiful houses of worship. Perhaps that is only natural. Certainly we want our church facility to be as inviting and lovely as it can be, since it does serve as a reminder to all of things eternal. But clearly Christ did not assess the spiritual vitality of the people by the size of the stones in the temple! In fact, he foresaw that they would crumble, but that he, when “torn down,” would be raised again on the third day. When Christ is living in us, we are God’s temple, as St. Paul pointed out. For while God does not dwell in houses made of stone, or brick, or wood, God does make a dwelling place within us who gather in such places, and who then are scattered like seed thrown on many fields.
