Luke 23:56 “On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.”
Is there a silence more profound than a sealed tomb? Joseph of Arimathea, a justice of the court, had petitioned Pontius Pilate for the body of Jesus and interred him, rolling a large stone over the mouth of the burial cave. Some of the women close to Jesus had hastily prepared his broken body for burial, knowing the sabbath’s beginning at sunset was near. But after that, silence.
Has there been a rest more deserved, more needed, than that of the Crucified One? The disciples and the women rested according to the commandment. The One who had said, “It is finished,” rested. Yet even in his supreme rest, both scripture and creed affirm the Lord proclaimed release to captives.
