For this purpose

John 12:27 - "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour?' No, for this purpose I have come to this hour."

The cross, for Jesus, was no accident. It was not simply another in a long list of tragic deaths of the innocent. This was the means - mysterious to us - by which God would offer the grace of life to dying humanity. It was for this Christ came! 'This hour,' this brutal pathway of Calvary, this way of the cross, was Jesus' purpose. Even so, his obedience to the divine purpose was difficult beyond our imagining. Whose soul would not be troubled at such a prospect? Yet in the face of that trial, here we see the matchless courage and resolution of Christ, his utter trust in the will of God. It is this that emboldens us to follow.
