"He ate my lunch," my pastor friend Roger admitted with a chuckle. He was telling about a conversation he had with a Muslim at a local Waffle House recently. "He knew a lot more about Christianity than I knew about Islam," he went on. Even so, Roger was pleased with the interaction, feeling as if he did gain a new friend in the exchange, and that there was at least a modest opportunity to share what Christ has meant to him. It may be that their conversation will continue somewhere down the road.
The Church I relate to has an important comment in its official Confession of Faith. "In carrying out the apostolic commission [to make disciples], the covenant community has encountered and continues to encounter people who belong to religions which do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord. While respecting persons who adhere to other religions, Christians are responsible to share with them the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ."
