Sorry?

Joel 2:12 - "Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments..."

Ours is an age in which the only sorrow for wrongdoing appears to result from getting caught. Corporate executives take no responsibility for decisions that bankrupted countless thousands of families. Politicians blame "the other side of the aisle" for the woes of the nation. Sports figures deny, accuse others, or explain away their use of "performance enhancing drugs." Religious leaders cover up, or placate, or re-assign. Pop idols make their living to a large extent by appearing to be "bad."

Even though we Christians often spend a few moments acknowledging our sinfulness in public worship, it rarely disturbs us much. What of this broken-heartedness for sin the prophet calls us to? Certainly we have the assurance that when we truly confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse from all unrighteousness through Christ. But this free gift of grace comes at a staggering cost!
