Lenten E-Word

Hebrews 2:18 - "For because he (Christ) himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted..."

No subject perhaps is more familiar to us than temptation. We know how, unbidden, thoughts from a deep darkness leap to our minds. We recall with sadness that contemptuous word uttered to a loved one in unthinking anger. We despair at how ready we are to think the worst when rumors come our way, how lack of trust creeps around the edges of our relationships. With the apostle Paul, we admit that "the good we want to do, we cannot do, and the wrong we have no desire to do is what we often end up doing." Our Savior suffered temptation beyond our imagination, yet overcame it, not only in the wilderness, but often at the Tempter's "opportune time." And he knew the weakness of his followers. So he taught us pray, "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."
