Fishing

Matthew 4:19 - "And Jesus said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people'"

Sometimes when we read this verse there's an inclination to get so caught up (pardon the pun!) in the "fishing" angle (pun again!) that we might not listen as carefully as we could to the first part of the call: "Follow me." Our call to evangelism is first a call to discipleship. How would the original disciples have been "witnesses" for Christ, if they had not walked with him? How could they have shared anything of his message, his concern, or his healing touch if they had not followed him from village to village? Even more, how could they have proclaimed him Lord and Savior had they not experienced the devastation of that first Good Friday and the exaltation of that first Easter?

Jesus still calls us to follow him. It is in following Jesus that we have the privilege to "let down our nets" for his sake.
